What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the oldest secular social and charitable organisations in the world.

Membership is open to adults from all backgrounds and our aim is to empower members to be the best they can be. Freemasonry is about building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society.

It provides a structure for members to build new friendships and develop themselves, whilst having family inclusive fun.

One of the largest charitable givers in the country, Ely Freemasons support a great many good causes locally. For more information email us at elyfreemasons@gmail.com  or visit www.pglcambs.org.uk.

There are 4 Lodges that meet in Ely with the oldest dating from 1898.

Freemasonry frequently asked questions can be found at https://www.pglcambs.org.uk/faqs.

Who Are Freemasons?

People join Freemasonry for many different reasons, some join for the friendships they will make that last a lifetime.

Members meet people who are different to themselves, not only different ages but with radically different life experiences and interests, drawn together by common experience through Freemasonry.

Members are, and have been for over three centuries, drawn from all walks of life. From Captains of industry and chief executives to manual labourers and forklift truck drivers, in Lodges you will find people with a wealth of different outlooks from all races, religions and backgrounds.

Charitable Giving & Volunteering

Freemasons are taught to look after those less fortunate than themselves, charity (whether fundraising or volunteering time) is a key component of Freemasonry, which supports local communities and good causes as well as larger scale projects within counties, national and internationally.

Importantly Freemasons have a huge amount of fun along the way, although only members can attend meetings, we are family and friend inclusive in our Social Events.

Most Lodges operate a very active social program, which is open to non-members to attend. This a great way for interested parties and prospective members (and their families) to see for themselves whether they would enjoy the Masonic experience.

Charity includes both fundraising and volunteering and Ely Freemasons support good causes both in our local communities and on a wider scale.
